Domaine "Le Basque", Vintage 1997 Folle Blanche

Vintage 1997 Folle Blanche. Armagnac (compared with Cognac) is distilled once at a higher temperature so a rather lower alcohol percentage. It is distilled in a colomn still (alambic armagnacais), so normally the Armagnac has a slightly higher water part in which most of the flavor and fragrance are. So the influences of terroir, grapes, etc. are bigger in an Armagnac than in a Cognac. That is why some people find Armagnac has a slightly fuller flavor than Cognac. Both Armagnac and Cognac are matured in Oak barrels.

Michel Lamothe is the owner and distiller of this Armagnac. He is a man at age, who distills in a traditional way. 'Distillé Non-Reduit' what means not diluted with water. It is a rustic full armagnac with a great nose.

Very special is that instead of a Ugni Blanc this Bas-Armagnac is made from the Folle Blanche, a grape which has a lower harvest and is rather sensitive for diseases; maybe that is the reason that it delivers such a beautiful armagnac.
